The city of Rome is a truly worthwhile place to go and visit. The city has brilliant and authentic Italian cuisine around every corner and there are plenty of bars where you can go and sample the finest Italian wine. The history of the city is of course the main reason why people go to see and the famous landmarks and buildings certainly do not disappoint.
The Coliseum
The world’s largest amphitheatre is recognisable by pretty much anybody in the world today. The tickets to go inside are fairly expensive but it is well worth a visit. You can really get a sense of what the place used to be like, when it was still operational. The structural integrity of the building does not allow tourists to go right to the top but you can certainly go as high as you may like. There are a number of artefacts and information boards inside that really tell of the history and prestige of the coliseum.
This is one of the things you really must do if you visit the city. The coliseum is a bit further out than most of the other attractions but it is well worth the trip and there are lots of more up market and slightly more expensive restaurants just outside the perimeter. There is also the Roman forum very close by which is well worth a visit.
The Vatican
This place is definitely worth a visit and not just if you are a Christian. You could queue for hours to get in but it is well worth it. The first part of the tour takes you to the top of St. Peters Basilica, where you can marvel at the breath-taking views of Rome. You are then led to the inside of St. Peter’s basilica where you are met by fantastic architecture, paintings and things with historical value.
The final part of the trip really is epic. A trip to the Sistine chapel really is a magical experience, even if you are not religious. One of the most famous paintings int he world, of God touching Adam at the fingertips is joined by several other spectacular pieces of art on the ceiling. The Vatican City really is unlike any place you will have ever been. There are an enormous amount of statues and artwork everywhere you look.
Other Things
There are many more world famous sites that are worth a visit. The first is the pantheon, a wonderful piece of architecture that sits in the middle of the city and is full of artwork. Another thing well worth a visit is Trevi fountain, this is perhaps the most famous fountain in the world and the sculpture works here are magnificent.
